Difference between Petrol and Diesel Engine

The key difference between Petrol and Diesel engines is that petrol and diesel engines are mostly the same in terms of their mechanism. The main difference is that while they are similar they are different in a lot of aspects.

Petrol and diesel engines are very much similar when it comes to their mechanism or their working. They are similar in the way that they use the same concept of intake, compression, ignition, and exhaust in order to function. The working of the diesel engine and the petrol engine is very much similar.

What is Petrol?

Petrol is a colourless liquid with an unpleasant smell. It’s a common fuel for cars and other vehicles, but there’s much more to petrol than that. Petrol is a mixture of hydrocarbons, the most important of which are paraffin and aromatics. The word “petroleum” comes from the Latin word “petra”, which means rock, and “oleum”, which means oil.
Petrol is so common that it’s easy to forget what a special substance it is. It powers our cars, makes our plastics, and heats our homes.

What is Diesel Engine?

The diesel engine is a kind of internal combustion engine which works on the principle of compression ignition i.e the air is compressed and heated by the piston in the cylinder and then the fuel is injected and ignited to produce power.
The working of the diesel engine is similar to a gasoline engine but the only difference is that in a diesel engine, heat is provided by the heat of compression.

 Properties of Petrol

  1. Gasoline engines work on the principle of the Otto cycle.
  2. On gasoline engines, the carburetor is equipped with one cylinder.
  3. A mixture of air and fuel is introduced into the cylinder of the gasoline engine.
  4. Gasoline engines are equipped with spark plugs in the cylinder.
  5. The compression ratio of a gasoline engine is typically 7:1.
  6. Gasoline engines produce less power.
  7. The handle structure is lightweight.
  8. Gasoline engines are used in light vehicles.
  9. In a gasoline engine, a battery is needed to generate sparks.
  10. Gasoline engines are more expensive to maintain.
  11. Due to the low compression ratio, the size of the gasoline engine is small.

Properties of Diesel Engine

  1. Diesel engines work on the principle of the diesel cycle.
  2. On diesel engines, the carburetor is not equipped with a cylinder. Instead of a carburetor, a fuel injector and fuel pump are used to supply diesel.
  3. In diesel engines, the fuel injector is equipped with a cylinder.
  4. For diesel engines, the compression ratio is 16:1.
  5. More power is developed here in the diesel engines.
  6. In this case, the steering wheel structure is heavy.
  7. Diesel engines are used for heavier vehicles.
  8. In diesel, the engine battery is essential for a single lighting function.
  9. Diesel engines are less expensive to maintain.
  10. Diesel engines are bulky because higher compression ratios are achieved.
